Working Offshore: What Is OPITO BOSIET and How Much Does It Cost?

Working Offshore: What Is OPITO BOSIET and How Much Does It Cost?

If you’re planning to work offshore in a general international region or a cold-water environment, an OPITO BOSIET training is a must-have qualification. For work in these regions, you’ll take the BOSIET certificate, a safety course designed for offshore workers operating in general or cold climates.

Whether you’re new to the offshore oil & gas industry or looking to renew your expired certificate, here’s everything you need to know about OPITO BOSIET — including the training content, duration, cost, and where to attend.

📝 What is BOSIET?

BOSIET stands for Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. It is an internationally recognised training developed by OPITO for personnel working in general offshore locations, typically associated with cold or temperate climates where specialist survival suits are required.

This course prepares workers to handle emergency situations such as helicopter evacuation, fire, sea survival, first aid and self-rescue tailored to the specific environmental challenges of general offshore regions.

👥 Who Needs to Take BOSIET?

You need to attend BOSIET if:

  •
    • You’re new to working offshore

    • You haven’t worked offshore in the past 4 years

    • Your previous BOSIET or T-BOSIET certificate has expired

If you renew your certification, you may be eligible for FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training), a 1-day refresher course.

🛠️ BOSIET: Course Structure

BOSIET includes four main modules:

  •
    • Safety Induction

    • Helicopter Safety & Escape (HUET)

    • Sea Survival and First Aid (Training often includes the use of survival suits for cold water)

    • Firefighting & Self-Rescue

You will practice realistic scenarios in a controlled, supervised environment. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a strong swimmer or know how to swim to complete the training.

In each training session, instructors and divers will be close by to ensure your safety during training and to ensure you understand the action that needs to be taken in case of emergency!

⏳ Duration of BOSIET

The standard BOSIET course lasts 3 days.

📜 Certificate Validity

BOSIET is valid for 4 years from the date of issue.
